There are many typically german breakfasts but in Germany, there is also a variant of the well known pancakes. Pancakes in general reach as far back as the Stone Age. It has appeared often in literature and everyone can visualise a pancake. However, over time, each region or country went adapting the familiar recipe and presenting it in different ways. The following recipe is the German version of this very nutritious food. It is a very easy recipe and, who doesn’t enjoy a nice Pfannkuchen for breakfast?

Ingredients
- 300g Flour
- 300ml Milk
- 2 Egg
- 6Tbsp Sugar
- 2tsp Vanilla Extract
- pinch Salt
- 1 1/2 Tbsp Chocolate Chips
Instructions
- Mix the salt, sugar and flour.
- Whisk the eggs into the milk and add the vanilla extract.
- Use an electric mixer to mix the milk mixture into the flour.
- Mix well to make sure there are no clumps left.
- Integrate the chocolate chips into the batter.
- Melt a bit of butter in a small pan.
- Pour some of the batter into the centre of the pan and let it fill the pan.
- Cook on low heat until bubbles form on the top and it is mostly cooked through.
- Flip the pancake and cook for a few more minutes.
- Transfer onto a plate.
- And enjoy with whatever you like best!
Variations
Similar to American pancakes or Crepes, Pfannkuchen can be enjoyed with whatever you like best. From caramel sauce and whipped cream to nutella.
If you want to make savoury Pfannkuchen, you can leave out the chocolate chips or substitute them for bacon.
